Telstra activates it 3G network for 5G low band

Telstra plans to reuse some of it’s 3G mobile network spectrum for 5G. Telstra starting running tests in November on the 5G in the 850MHz spectrum which is a low band used from it’s existing 3G network. Usually 5G runs on 3.5GHz and 3.6GHz bands. The tests were recently completed and results were successful with the company expecting to roll this out for commercial use as soon as feasible.

One of the primary drivers behind the use of the 3G network is due to the fact that the 3G network load is continually decreasing with most users utilising it’s 4G and 5G network. The 3G network is scheduled to be decommissioned in mid 2024. This will mean that the network will be available to be reused as the more valuable 5G service. Adding 5G low band 850Mhz to the Telstra 5G network means that they will be able to offer great 5G coverage for their service and will also allow coverage in much more remote places than previously expected. This will all be achievable at a lower cost than implementing completely new infrastructure. Telstra has already activated 1200 sites to allow them to run 5G on the 850Mhz spectrum.

The advantage of this new 850Mhz spectrum is that it will allow Telstra to provide 5G data sessions to distances over 80km. However, it does require that you have a device that is able to utilise the 5G at 850Mhz which Telstra currently offer.
